Step 1: Set Up Base Camp on the Homer Spit

Before diving into your adventures, choose the right place to stay. The Homer Spit is a 4.5-mile stretch of land extending into Kachemak Bay and serves as the center of summer activity. Staying on the Spit puts you within walking distance of the harbor, restaurants, galleries, and the departure point for many of Homer’s most popular tours.

Day 1: Experience World-Class Fishing

Homer has earned its reputation as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” making fishing the perfect way to begin your vacation. Starting with your charter also allows you to process and freeze your catch before heading home later in your trip.

Morning: Fish for Halibut and Salmon

As you leave the harbor, enjoy spectacular views of the Kenai Mountains, rugged coastline, and Kachemak Bay. Keep your eyes open—you may be lucky enough to spot sea otters, Dall’s porpoises, bald eagles, or even whales along the way. Wildlife sightings are common, although they are never guaranteed.

After an unforgettable day on the water, take your catch to one of Homer’s local seafood processors, where it can be vacuum-sealed, flash frozen, and prepared for travel.

Many local restaurants on the Homer Spit also offer “cook your catch” services, allowing you to enjoy the freshest seafood imaginable while watching the sunset over Kachemak Bay.

Day 2: See Alaska’s Wildlife

No Homer itinerary is complete without seeing Alaska’s famous coastal brown bears.

Morning: Fly Across Cook Inlet

Depart Homer on a floatplane or bush plane for a Bear Viewing Adventure.

Day 3: Explore Kachemak Bay

A water taxi transports you across the bay, where your guide leads you through calm waters surrounded by towering cliffs and pristine beaches.
